I'm not sure if this is a sewing question or a fashion question. Maybe both. Consider a short-sleeved shirt of plain lightweight silk. I think the style is called a "camp shirt" but I'm not sure. It has buttons up the front, a collar, 2 breast pockets. Well, this particular shirt has buttonholes up the front. It's missing two rather critical buttons. I bargained the price way down, talking about how difficult it would be to match the red buttons, or to replace the whole set. It would be a lot more efficient to just scavenge a couple of less critical buttons from elsewhere on the shirt.

If you wear shirts like this, do you ever button the collar when you're not wearing the shirt with a tie? The collar has two buttons about an inch apart (so there's no gap at the neck even though the fabric is so soft) and then it goes to standard button spacing. Do you button the shirt pockets? They're the kind without flaps on top, and I won't be putting anything in them. I know a lot of shirt pockets don't HAVE buttons, but I was raised in a microculture where empty buttonholes can be regarded as objectionable. It's hard for me to tell when this should apply.
